Eye See…Eye Learn® provides
comprehensive eye exams by local Doctors of Optometry to junior
kindergarten students in participating school regions. The eye exams are
covered under provincial health insurance (or OHIP) when you show your
child’s health card. This means that there is no out-of-pocket cost for
the eye exam.
If the child requires a pair of glasses, they will receive a FREE pair
donated by Nikon Lenswear, OGI and your participating Doctor of
Optometry. The value of the glasses is estimated over $250.
The Eye See...Eye Learn® program was
developed to raise awareness among parents of the importance of having
their children's eyes checked upon starting school. Each year thousands
of children start school without ever having an eye exam.
Children, who cannot see the board, focus on a picture or follow words
in a book may struggle to achieve their full learning potential. Vision
problems can also impact their hand-eye coordination for physical
activities and even impact their social development. In fact, 80 percent
of learning comes directly through vision.
The Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO) recognizes the important
link between eye health and learning, and recommends comprehensive eye
examinations for all children entering kindergarten. The Eye See...Eye
Learn® program will help make sure our kindergarten students get the
best start to learning.
The program is funded in part by the Government Ontario. For more information, visit:

Who Does What in Education
People for Education has tips for parents in more than 12 languages. This week, check out People for Education’s Who Does What in Education
tip sheet. When parents need help or information, they may be uncertain
who to approach for support. Ontario’s education system is complex,
involving different levels of government and staff within the school.
And with a municipal election around the corner, it is important to
understand the role of your local trustee.
The
tip sheet has everything parents need to know about the roles of the
Ministry of Education, the Ontario College of Teachers, the Education
Quality and Accountability Office, local school boards, and school
staff.

Welcome Back!
Another school year begins with great expectations for learning and making new friends. We welcome back old friends and look forward to meeting new families.
Humber Valley Village School is fortunate to have a
very active School Council. The Council
is made up of 25 voting parent members, the Principal and a teacher representative.
Council meetings are open to
all parents of children
in the school, and you are encouraged to attend the meetings. These meetings
are a great way to keep informed about what is going on in the school. Meetings take place on the first Wednesday of most months during the school
year, so please join us and find out what we are all about! If you cannot
attend meetings, check out our link on the school website to find out what
events we are working on or to see the monthly meeting minutes.
What is the purpose of your School Council?
The Humber Valley Village
School council was formed to:
- Enrich the school and community life of all students through financial support,
- Support the Principal and teachers within the framework of the school’s curriculum and objectives,
- Give parents a better understanding of the role of the school, teachers and themselves in the educational process, and
- Provide a forum to pursue issues related to the school and the students.
- Come to council meetings
- Volunteer to help out at events
- Donate items that can be used in the school’s fundraising efforts
- Offer your expertise
Please contact your 2014-2015 School Council Co-Chairs
with any questions or ideas you may have throughout the year. The new council executive will be announced
after the voting meeting on September 17.
